RFC recruits best Technical Director in Canada

This news blows the roof off: After a spotty history with technical directors over the last decade, Richmond FC pulled off a major coup in recruiting former player agent, UK development expert, Coerver Coaching boss, and Canadian national champion builder David Thorburn this season.

Thorburn, who spent six months trying out the setup at RFC before committing, has now signed for three years and set out to completely redesign the technical system at RFC.

With a focus on coach development, he’s hit the ground running and taken more than a dozen boys and girls under his wing, having them shadow him as he runs his coach development programs and runs youth camps.

While people on various sides of the aisle will often find fault with clubs that aren’t their own, there’s no denying this hiring is a massive boost to a program that was starting to creak around the edges.

Thorburn was recruited by RFC Executive Director Marius Roevde, who had reportedly played under Thorburn during his days as a pro player agent, and coached with him in the MLS and for national teams.

Roevde’s start as an Executive Director wasn’t without problems, but he’s brought in significant revenue to RFC over the last year through sponsorships and lotteries, and Thorburn’s recruitment is a masterstroke.
